About the Project
This video was memorable to me because it was a test of my one-man-show. On the day of shooting, I balanced several jobs. One minute I’m monitoring audio and changing out batteries, then I’m a cinematographer, setting up shots, then I’m on-camera, interviewing my ex. Not to mention the pre-production I had done as far as detours along the roadtrip. The video really pushed me to my limits to do everything by myself, and it was rewarding to watch it all come together day-of and during the edit.
The edit took an interesting turn because I wanted to have stop-motion-style graphics throughout to help tie pieces of the story together. It was a new design language for me, and I thought it gave the video the right whimsical feel.
My goal in the edit was to make the viewer fall in love with my ex. I wanted to tell her story, and give her the platform, while I took a supporting character role. In the end, when we discuss love and relationships, I hoped that the emotional conversations we had would be that much more impact after the audience had developed a connection with her. I’m proud that this video was able to balance whimsical lightheartedness with heavier, more emotional concepts.
