About the Project
This marked the first collaboration I did with Santa Barbara based producer and rapper imKennethy. He wanted a music video for two of his songs, 'Broken Promises' and 'Drifter' and he reached out to me and my creative partner.
The greatest challenge was how starkly different the two songs were. The first is hopeful; carefree. While the second is slower, bittersweet, and nostalgic. Despite these thematic differences, we needed to craft a coherent story.
After discussing the beats he wanted to get across in the video: the end of a relationship, coming of age, and acceptance, we began storyboarding the shots we wanted. We knew we wanted to revisit the same locations in each song, but remove the male lead in the second. Through this return, we were able to combine the songs, and use the negative space to create a sense of isolation.
This was the first music video I'd filmed and edited, as well as the first time directing models in a video format. Location scouting, operating a gimbal, and proper storyboarding were all new experiences to me that I've since develop upon greatly.
